About Hanni
I have more than a decade of experience building grantmaking programs and catalyzing collaborative funding initiatives focused on peace, gender equity, democracy, and social justice. These days, I bring that experience to bear as an independent consultant, working with foundations on strategy, facilitation, and program design.
Before becoming a consultant, I worked for nearly 10 years at the Compton Foundation, where I led grantmaking strategy across reproductive justice, democracy, climate solutions, and peace. My last few years there were focused on the foundation's planned spend-down, a five-year process of redistributing $20 million in assets to organizations working on gender and racial justice.
I came to philanthropy as an organizer ā first as a climate advocate, then in youth leadership development, supporting young people to lead for social justice and sustainability in their communities. That orientation still shapes how I approach this work. I currently serve on the board of Common Defense, a pro-democracy movement of grassroots veterans. Iām also a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley's Institute for the Study of Societal Issues, where I've published and presented research on the evolving environmental politics of the far right in the US and Europe.
I hold a Masters in Politics and International Studies from the University of Cambridge and a Bachelors in Religious Studies with Honors from Stanford University. I live in Oakland, California with my partner.
